The laboratories affiliated with the Information Technology Branch Directorate are provided for our students to carry out coursework, assignments, and academic research. In order to ensure that the laboratories are used for their intended purpose, the rules stated below must be followed.
The Information Technology Branch Directorate reserves the right to amend these Usage Policies by taking possible legal developments into consideration.
I. Laboratory Use:
Information Technology laboratories are intended for the use of Boğaziçi University students only. Individuals who are not BU students may not use these laboratories. Login to laboratory computers is carried out using the BU-Mail account (e.g. ad.soyad@bogazici.edu.tr / ad.soyad@std.bogazici.edu.tr) obtained from the Information Technology Department. When you finish working, you must leave the computer by performing a LOG OFF.
Why do I need to LOG OFF?
Each user logs into the computer with their own email account. User login and logout times in the laboratories are recorded by the Information Technology Branch Directorate. During the time you are logged in, you are responsible for all actions performed on that computer. Actions that compromise security, such as sending harmful emails or attempting to attack another system, will be attributed to the person using that computer at the time.
!! If you leave the computer without logging off, you will be held responsible for the actions of the next user!
II. General Rules:
Bringing food and beverages into the laboratories is prohibited. Work areas must be kept clean and orderly. The use of mobile phones is prohibited in the laboratories. Smoking and the use of tobacco products are prohibited. Loud talking or arguments that disturb the quiet environment are prohibited. Computers may not be used by more than one person at a time. Playing games in the laboratories is prohibited. Accessing websites that contain content contrary to public morals or that disturb other users is prohibited. Users must comply with the Dress Code Regulation (in accordance with YÖK regulations). Our laboratories are monitored by security cameras and recordings are kept; users must use the laboratories with this awareness.
III. General Use:
Any behavior that may damage the hardware of laboratory computers is prohibited. Actions that prevent the proper functioning of operating systems or installed software are prohibited. Attempting to access or modify the security systems or configurations of the BU Information Technology Branch Directorate is prohibited. Sending unsolicited emails (SPAM) is prohibited. Sending emails that violate personal rights or contain insults is prohibited. Using another user's email account to send messages without explicit permission is prohibited. Each user is responsible for their own account and password. Copying, transmitting, publishing, or distributing materials that violate copyright (texts, articles, books, films, music, etc.) is prohibited. Storage media must be checked for viruses before use.
Implementation and Sanctions
Depending on the severity, repetition, and the extent of damage caused to resources or individuals/institutions, the following sanctions may be applied by the Information Technology Branch Directorate:
1. The user may be warned verbally and/or in writing.
2. The user’s access to Information Technology Department laboratories may be restricted for a limited or unlimited period.
3. Disciplinary action may be taken in accordance with applicable regulations.
Cases where usage policies and user definitions are insufficient shall be evaluated by the Boğaziçi University authorities.
