What is VPN?
VPN is an abbreviation of Virtual Private Network. VPN enables users to securely access their institution and institutional resources over Internet-enabled networks. The communication over the VPN connection established between the user and the institution is encrypted, preventing third parties from intercepting the communication. At the same time, the integrity of the communication (ensuring that the data is not altered) is maintained.
What Can Be Done with the BU VPN Service?
When users connect to the VPN system, they are assigned a virtual IP address from within the institution’s network. In this way, they can benefit from services such as licensed services that are restricted outside the institution and/or access computers within the institution for file sharing or remote desktop purposes.
Who Can Use the BU VPN Service?
The BU VPN service is provided to academic / administrative staff and PhD students.
What Are the Limits of the BU VPN Service?
The VPN service can serve up to 1000 users simultaneously, and each user can establish a maximum of one concurrent connection. During the time users are connected to the service, all internet traffic passes through BU Net. Therefore, throughout the connection period, the “Boğaziçi University Information Resources Usage Policies” apply.

The documents required to be completed by contractors or individuals who will provide services to Boğaziçi University are available in the attached files. These documents must be coordinated by the requesting unit and submitted to the Information Technology Department – Information Security Unit via the Work Tracking System, duly approved and signed.
The required application and authorization documents for contractor companies or external individuals who will provide services to Boğaziçi University are included in the attached files. In order to initiate the VPN access process, the documents listed below must be completed in full:
The relevant documents must be coordinated by the requesting unit and submitted, duly approved and signed, to the Information Technology Department – Information Security Unit via the Work Tracking System.
Following the review and completion of the approval process, the VPN accesses for users authorized within the scope of the request will be activated. VPN connectivity is provided in accordance with the security policies determined by the university, and access is granted only to defined resources.

Important Notes- This VPN access is provided solely for authorized contractor personnel working on behalf of Boğaziçi University.
- VPN accounts will be created only after submission of a fully completed and approved VPN Request Form along with all necessary documentation.
- User privileges are restricted to the authorized duration and assigned systems.
- VPN access will be automatically revoked upon the end of the contract or completion of the assigned duties.
- All actions performed during VPN usage are logged in accordance with information security policies.
